Recognised by thick-walled chlamydospores, F. chlamydosporum is found in soil and on plant debris. Indoors, it can develop on wet plaster or wood, especially in dark, poorly ventilated spaces. Certain strains have been linked to opportunistic infections in immunocompromised individuals. Improving air circulation, regulating humidity, and regular inspection of hidden areas (e.g. behind walls) help prevent extensive colonisation.
