Widespread in outdoor environments, particularly on decomposing plant matter, C. herbarum can infiltrate indoor spaces through air currents. It tends to form dark-coloured patches in areas with elevated moisture, such as bathrooms or around window frames. Its airborne spores are a common trigger for respiratory allergies (hay fever, asthma). Regular ventilation, dehumidification, and surface cleaning help to curb its presence indoors.
