Commonly seen outdoors as a bracket or shelf fungus on living or dead hardwood, G. applanatum can occasionally occur on severely rotting wood in or around buildings. Its large, hard fruiting bodies produce copious brown spores. Inhaling high concentrations of these spores could irritate the respiratory system, but this is rare indoors. Proper maintenance of wooden structures and removing decaying wood near homes help prevent colonisation.
